What is the Pinewood Derby?

A bunch of fun! On race day it is a Pack of Cub Scouts racing gravity powered wooden CARS of various shapes and colors rolling on plastic wheels down a plywood track. But the actual competition is only a small part of it. The building of the car, from coming up with the design to applying the last coat of paint, is where the real fun is at. Each Cub Scout gets a kit with a block of wood, four nails for axles, and four plastic wheels. Always keeping in mind the Pack's RULES, he shapes and paints his block of wood into a form to race down the track. This block of wood on wheels may end up looking like a car, a fish, a cartoon character, or even a coffin on wheels! Almost anything!

Who Can Race?

All Cub Scouts in Pack 1383 are eligible to race. Our Pack divides the Cub Scouts by rank. We award four (4) trophies to the top four cars at the pack level. We award twenty (20) medals for the top for cars at each rank (Tiger/Wolf/Bear/Webelo I/Weblo II). In addition to these, we give ribbons for miscellaneous awards such as: 'Best Design', 'Most Patriotic', and 'Shiniest Care' (see below) to give credit for creativity and effort.

How Do You Race?

The cars are gravity powered, and run down a track of two to eight lanes. Ours is currently a three lane track. The Track's start line is about. 5' high, and the track slopes down to the floor and levels off for the final 16' or so. The cars are placed on the starting line, the judge pulls the starting device, and they are off, heading for the finish. An electronic sensor determines the finish order.

What does a Pinewood Derby Car Look Like?

The car comes out of the box as a block of wood. From there, the scouts can transform it into a various shapes from a fire truck, to a triangular wedge, to a grand-prix racecar, to anything imaginable that fits into the RULES.
